South Africa Stripped of World Cup Qualifying Points Over Ineligible Player

South Africa’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken a heavy blow after FIFA’s disciplinary committee stripped them of three points for fielding an ineligible player.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena featured in Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 win over Lesotho in March 2025, despite having accumulated two yellow cards in previous qualifiers—making him automatically suspended. As a result, FIFA has overturned the match, awarding Lesotho a 3-0 victory.

In addition to losing the points, South Africa has been fined 10,000 Swiss Francs (approx. $12,500), while Mokoena has received an official warning.

This ruling has shaken CAF Group C standings:

  • Benin now sit top of the group, level on 14 points with South Africa but ahead on goal difference.
  • Nigeria and Rwanda are just three points behind with two games left.
  • Only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup, with runners-up facing a difficult playoff path.

The remaining fixtures in October will be decisive:

  • October 10: Benin vs Rwanda, Lesotho vs Nigeria, South Africa vs Zimbabwe
  • October 14: South Africa vs Rwanda, Nigeria vs Benin

This is not the first time an African nation has been punished for fielding an ineligible player. Similar cases in past World Cup qualifiers have changed the course of entire campaigns, including Nigeria (2018) and Cape Verde (2014).

For South Africa, the ruling is both a costly setback and an embarrassment. Head coach Hugo Broos admitted: “We did something bad, we did something we shouldn’t do.”
